Campaign to Stop Plutonium Powered Cassini Mission

by Carol Sue Rosin

Activists in Germany and England are sending President Clinton postcards to cancel Cassini. Marin County, California Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to pass a resolution calling on NASA to cancel Cassini as long as plutonium is on board as a power source. The Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice is sending out information packages around the world.

The World Space Commission calls on leaders of the world to support alternatives to nuclear power being launched from earth that risks life as we know it.

Is it worth the risk to the lives of all world citizens to allow the largest payload of plutonium, 73 pounds, to be launched when there could be an accident? When there are accidents?! Are you ready to die in October, or in August when the fly-by occurs that could end us all?

How could our leaders allow such a program to exist? Have they all gone mad? Are they so desperate to fill their pocketbooks with money that they will work on anything, even if it puts us at such a high risk?

U.S. officials finally admitted that they do not know what happened to the deadly plutonium on board the Russian probe that crashed to earth along the Bolivia/Chili border in November,'96, across a 10,000 square mile area. We do know that the canisters are not as strong and heat resistant as some experts once claimed.

The U.S. rationalizes funding the research and development of unnecessary weapons and nuclear everything by building fear in people. We are all supposed to fear the "rogue" leaders and terrorists, but not fear the U.S. plutonium launches that will likely kill us all.

The supporters of murder by plutonium say it is actually safe enough to brush your teeth with it. When is the last time you saw anyone prove itÑbrush their teeth with plutonium? Others say that we have toxins in our environment already "so what if we put more there." There is so much radioactive contamination on our world that perhaps we should all just give up. Why bother to care anymore. Let Ôem launch.

On January 17th, a spectacular explosion of a Delata 11 rocket, with a $40 million Air Force satellite, exploded 13 seconds after launch at Cape Canaveral, Florida. People had to breathe the toxic chemicals and hide from falling debris. Residents for 100 miles around tried to close their windows and doors to keep out the deadly nitrogen tetroxide and monomethylhydrazine cloud.

In October, Ô97, a Titan 14, which has shown us it is accident prone, is launching this 72.3 pounds of plutonium. One pound of plutonium could induce lung cancer to every person on earth.

Accidents happen! So prepare to die. Believe the lies about how safe this launch is. Believe that since it isn't a 100% risk, that it's okay to let it happen. Remember, it might launch okay and it might kill us during the fly-by scheduled for August 16, 1999.

You may remember me the way IBM described me before giving speeches during a European speaking tour as an "optimistic, idealist realist." I maintain that image of myself, but having worked within the military industrial complex, I know that there is reason to be pessimistic regarding this Cassini mission. It's truly dangerous and not worth the risk. It must be halted. There is a positive solution. The mission can take place at a later date. Alternative energy sources can be provided. It is possible. There is no reason to push this, or anything. This is the time for us to flow easily. There are higher forces with us. We just have to "imagine" and we can have anything we want.

There are many people with vested interests promoting the launch of the Cassini mission. They need to rest assured they will maintain their jobs and money even if the launch is delayed until an alternative to launching this plutonium, any plutonium, is resolved.

Those of us who have only a vested interest in our lives and in maintaining healthy genetic codes and DNA of our children and their children need to contact Clinton NOW and tell him to stop this October Cassini mission. Simultaneously, ask Clinton to call on the scientific community, just as Reagan did to build "Star Wars," to find an alternative energy source. Unless he is ready to kiss Chelsea and Hillary good-bye in October, or August Ô99. I'm still an optimist. I think he wants his child to reach the millennium without lung cancer.
